Soon Vijayawada may also get a bullet train corridor if the feasibility tests to be conducted by the German Railways. The initial proposal was to construct a high-speed rail corridor in south linking Mysore-Bengaluru-Chennai. But, it has been extended to Vijayawada after the Union minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu, who also represents Andhra Pradesh as Rajya Sabha MP, has personally requested German govt. to extend the study to Vijayawada during the meeting held with German Transport and Digital Infrastructure at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi on Friday.
To be fully funded by the German government, the feasibility tests would start in early 2017. The bullet train runs at a speed of 300 km per hour. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has also been signed in this regard.
“The German delegation also expressed willingness to undertake feasibility study on speed upgradation on existing tracks besides assuring cooperation in station development and IT solutions for Indian Railways,” said the ministry. A joint working group of Indian Railways and its German counterparts will soon be formed to give a direction to the “Zero Accident Mission” of Indian Railways.
