In the midst of the severe cash crunch situation across the country following the ban on higher denomination currency notes, the extra working hours to print new currency notes at various mints are leaving the RBI staff fuming.
At least 700 workers belonging to the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL) employees union at RBI mint in Salboni, West Bengal, one of the four mints of the country where new currency notes are being printed, have refused to work for more than 9 hours in a shift saying that they are ‘not slaves or robots and that they need rest’.
Currently, the workers have been working nonstop for 12 hours a shift, including 3 hours additional shift, since November 14 to meet the high demand for new currency notes, especially the Rs.100 and Rs.500 notes, but they have now refused to work beyond 9 hours.
New currency notes from Rs.10 to Rs 2,000 denominations worth Rs 9.6 crore are being printed in every shift. With the workers refusing to work extra hours, a deficit printing of Rs.2.8 crore per shift is bothering the RBI officials.
